About my work

In my paintings en sculptires I try to bring atmoshere, emotion, tension and my surprise regarding men, man, woman in relation to eachother and surroundings.
I find inspiration in my passions: flamenco, bullfighting and on my travels.

As of 2005 I work part of the year on Paros; one of the Greek Cyclade Islands.
I'm fascinated by the marble from Paros. Marble which the old Greek used for their sculptures.
It has a fine structure and the light goes through it.

I search for the stones myself, in the old mine, rivers or during my walks.
I work in the old Greek tradition with hammer, peak and area chisel.
First I peal the stone, cut away all the bad pieces and stay with a base shape.

Then the search for a line or a shape starts. An exciting stage because I still don't know where it's going at.
I find my inspiration in the old art of the Cyclades..

Reviews

Brabants dagblad by Mary Winters;
Above all Jessy Boelen expresses the human being in her work: Bronze sculptures are like small stretched figures, nudes are volnurable.
Strong, expressive work full of emotion and tension.

Her paintings too have this ambience of loneliness. I liked 'sailing', where 2 figures without individual expressions despite their company don't seem to be able to reach out to each other.
Her most recent paintings seem to be a search for a different style. Colors darken, men disappears in an abstract composition.

From Dagblad Tubantia,….P.B.:
Three dry needle graphics were the opening of the exposition of bronze sculptures and paintings of jessy boelen.
In the characteristical lines we recognize the contours of two figures.

The same figures we see as well in the bronze scupltures as in the paintings. They are elemantary figures, at first more human than man or woman.
They stand free in the sculptures and paintings. The colours are diminished to a thorough use of black, grey and red. A certain threat can go out of it, but also a more neutral feeling of tension.
In the bronze sculptures it's a male or female figure, which shows mankind in general.
With the female sculptures Jessy Boelen most of the time only shows head and torso, she follows the passive and lovely image of the female character. For the men she chooses a figure with the head of a bird and wings.

The head with a snail seems to be looking at a certain direction and the wings are looking for a possibility to conquer the space. In these birdmen several traditions come together.
Think of angels and gods, of Greek and Egyptian art.
Jessy Boelen gives, in a very delicate way, form at thoughts about mankind, about the active and the passive, the male and female aspect.
Thoughts which play a role in our western society since ages.
